Part 3 of our Civil War Photos series, we feature women from the American Civil War era.

Mathew Brady (1823-1896) was one of the most creative and well-known photographers of the nineteenth century. Brady and his associates traveled the eastern part of the United States during the Civil War, capturing images of people, places and events to create a dramatic, telling account of the Civil War for the world to see. Photographing many subjects throughout the war, including various portraits of women and their attire. Here we present 25 such portraits for you to admire.

Civil War Women 1863-1864

Touring with the Union Army throughout the Civil War, Brady visited much of the country capturing the effects of the war through photos of people, towns, and battlefields. In addition to visiting cities for these photos, Brady kept studios in Washington, DC and New York City, New York where many famous persons from the era sat for portraits. He photographed influential politicians, war heroes, and average everyday persons involved in the conflict.
