My Grandparents – Russell and Vida Stevens

“Mamaw” and “Papaw” (Russell and Vida Stevens) were a fun part of my life as a kid.

I remember him telling me to save money. He always said that after you save the first one thousand dollars, the rest becomes easier. He never answered the why or how of that lesson. I have discovered though that what he was trying to teach me was a good and healthy habit. Once you work hard to save that first one thousand dollars, it becomes a great habit.

Mamaw taught me valuable lessons with gardening, harvesting, preparing, canning and freezing foods. She also taught me the importance of breakfast. It was the most important meal of the day. She got up before everyone else to have breakfast on the table as everyone woke up. She never skipped making breakfast and nobody ever skipped eating breakfast.

They were good people with good reputations. They knew that the character of a person would come out in the end. They knew that integrity and honesty was what needed to be taught and practiced. They were very good examples of those things as well as a great love and respect for each other.

I’m thankful I had grandparents who loved me and invested time and energy into my life.
