Sheriff Sgt. Ron Helus “died a hero” after being shot by a gunman who killed 12 total people at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California around 11:20pm (Pacific) on Wednesday, November 8, 2018.

Helus was among the first to arrive on the scene of the incident, entering the bar with a California Highway Patrol officer. Helus exchanged gunfire with the suspect, before being shot multiple times. Helus died at the hospital Thursday morning.

Services for Sgt. Ron Helus were held at Calvary Community Church, 5495 Via Rocas in Westlake Village.

Helus is survived by his wife and son.
